As if the markets weren't jittery enough, the Congressional Budget Office issued a stark warning that the federal government could run out of money to meet its obligations as early as August—and possibly even as soon as late May. Since January 21, the Treasury has been using special accounting maneuvers to keep the $36.1 trillion ceiling from being breached, but these measures are only temporary. A missed debt ceiling deadline could shake markets, deal a major blow to consumer confidence, and, unfortunately, increase mortgage rates. It's something to keep an eye on.
