Many investors are surprised (and even relieved) to learn that they can buy real estate with their retirement account.
In the current economic climate, it’s important to think beyond the traditional portfolio of stocks and bonds and invest in alternative assets like real estate, which can generate passive income.
In a Self-Directed IRA, you can purchase real estate and rental property with the benefit of tax-free or tax-deferred growth.

As you know, I love sharing my financial journey with you all! If you aren't familiar with how Carl and I achieved FI, you can read all about it on our blog, 1500 Days to Freedom. Or there's the time I tracked my budget for all of BiggerPockets to follow along in 2022.
Well, I'm back with more exciting news. Carl and I bought a house in June 2022 in a neighborhood we love. However, the layout doesn’t work for our family—it’s essentially one massive open room surrounded by bedrooms (an acoustical nightmare). On top of that, the back of the house blocks what should be a stunning golf course view.
After listing it as a medium-term rental through January 2025 and rethinking our financial approach after a conversation with Ramit Sethi, we’ve decided to rebuild it with the right layout, a big kitchen, and an outdoor space.
We’ll be documenting the entire process, including the numbers, in this newsletter—so stay tuned for updates! |
