With housing costs rising and insurance premiums reaching record highs, lawmakers say something drastic needs to be done to relieve pressure on homeowners. But the potential cost of repeal is massive. Property taxes currently fund more than $55 billion in public services, including up to 60% of school district budgets. To cover the shortfall, the state might need to double its sales tax from 6% to 12%, according to recent estimates.
