Imagine you accidentally achieve FIRE (financial independence, retire early) with a savings rate of just twenty percent. That’s right—not a fifty or seventy or eighty percent savings rate—twenty percent. Darren and Jolene did exactly that, reaching early retirement in their late forties after not even thinking about financial independence for most of their working careers. In fact, they only found out they were FI months before quitting their jobs. Pretty sweet, right? But, in order to achieve FIRE in their forties and travel the world every year, they needed to make some changes, reducing their housing costs and health insurance premiums while still living comfortably. They did just that and now split their time between Europe and the States, traveling within each as they hike to their hearts’ content, enjoying their FI life! We’ll talk about what couples MUST do when retiring at the same time (so you don’t start fighting), paying for health insurance and the best options, as well as transitioning from a high-paced work environment to the slow FIRE lifestyle you’ll love. 00:00 FIRE in Their Late 40s 01:19 Sponsor: Baselane! 02:14 We're Already FIRE? 04:27 More Time to Travel 05:39 How Much They Saved 08:22 Retirement Income Sources 11:31 What Retirement is Really Like 15:28 Transitioning to Retirement 20:23 FIRE as a Couple? 25:17 Early Retirement Healthcare 28:46 Running Out of Money? 32:03 Connect with Darren and Jolene!
